Photo Collage Decoupage
Creating a Photo Collage on Paper Mache Letters
1. Select the photos you want to use and either scan them or upload them to your computer. I use Picasa 3 to lay the pictures out in a collage form so that when I print them I can get different sized photos plus I can print more pictures on less paper. You can download Picasa 3 for free. It's a really nice photo organizer and editor.
2. Once the photos are selected and ready to print, have them printed on a laser printer (a toner printer). If you don't have one, places like Office Depot and Kinkos have them. If you use an ink jet printer, the colors will bleed and fade. I just download my photos to a flash drive and take it to Office Depot and they will print them out for you. It cost me $1.81 to print these photos. ( I had them laid out in collage format on three 8.5 x 11 sheets.)
3. Purchase a pre-made paper mache letter or design object. I got mine at JoAnn Fabrics.
4. Begin to tear or cut apart your photos. You can be more contemporary and straight cut all of your pictures or do like I did and tear them out for a more vintage look. If you tear them, tear the paper toward you. This will create a subtle white frayed edge. One of the photos I tore out, then crumpled the paper into a ball and then straightened it back out. That creates a vintage look to the photo like it was a treasured photo that had been carried around and looked at a lot.
5. You can dry arrange your photos on your letter to make sure everything will fit. I don't usually do that because I am impatient and what to start gluing. I am kind of a random and impulsive crafter, but if you want to do it right and don't want to have to run out and print more photos you probably should do this. Or....print extra photos and just wing it like I did!
6. You may want to paint the letter with acrylic paint first in a color of your choice. That way if you want to leave spaces between the photos, the color will show through. Again I was impatient and I painted in a few places after I glued the photos. It worked, but not the best way to do it.
7. I use Mod Podge as the glue and sealer. You can use white glue I guess, but I have never tried it. I like the Mod Podge because it dries fast and it comes in matte and gloss finishes. There are a bunch of different formulas of Mod Podge but I just use the basic cheapest one.
8. Brush the glue onto the letter where you want to put the picture and then place the photo and rub out the air bubbles. You have limited time to reposition the photo because the Mod Podge dries pretty fast. I use a bone folder to smooth out the air bubbles, but you can use your finger or even the side of a smooth pen. If you need to you can add a little Mod Podge here and there to get it to stick.
9. When all of your photos are on, let it dry completely (about 15 mins.). If you want an antique look, you can brush on an antiquing medium and wipe it off, or even use a little brown acrylic paint diluted with water and brush that on an wipe it off. First test you antiquing technique on a place that may not show to make sure you will like the results.
10. After all of your photos are on and it is how you want it to be when it's finished, it's time to layer on the Mod Podge. 3 layers would be the minimum. I usually use 5 or more. The picture of the "V" that I did doesn't have any layers added to it yet. You could just do 1 layer if you like that look. Just make sure it dries completely before adding the next layer. The Mod Podge goes on white and then turns clear when dry. If you don't let it dry between layers it may have a milky appearance.
The instructions sound like a lot of work, but it really isn't. I just tried to be detailed so you wouldn't make the mistakes that I already have.
Have fun! This would make a great last minute Christmas gift.

Kinky Crab Love
I had just finished fishing in the bay, and I was standing on the shore waiting for Joe. I looked down and there were two horseshoe crabs swimming toward me. It was typical, the male was riding around on the back of the female. They swam around the shoreline for awhile and the female started burrowing down into the sand right at the edge of the water. It was pretty cool, they have kind of a hinged body and water and air shoots out from the middle of their back. At least it did from the female. So they're just hanging out when here comes another male. He circles around them once and then goes up and tries to push the other guy out of the way. The first guy ain't budging. The second guy weasels his way in sideways. These horseshoe crabs are having a threesome right in front of my eyes. What's this? Another male? Three on one, holy crap! After a few minutes the third guy realizes he's not getting much action so he swims off. The two guys that are still there keep pushing each other around to get the best position, but neither are giving up. I decided that I wanted to see what was going on under those shells. They were partially out of the water, so I got down on my hands and knees and tried to look under their shells. All I could really see were little legs moving around everywhere. I'm not sure what I thought I would see but I had to look nonetheless. Then I decided that I was going to see if I could take them apart. I didn't try too hard, because I didn't want to hurt them. It was clear they were hooked together good! The third little guy was still hanging around the area; waiting for sloppy thirds I guess, so I picked him up and looked under his shell. EEEEwwwwwe! They are kind of creppy looking. I decided to do a little research to find out how they...you know....Do It! Here are some interesting facts I learned about horseshoe crabs.
- They don't actually "Do It". The male; who incidently is 25 - 30% smaller than the female, attaches himself to the female by way of a special extra large claw. The male rides around attached to the female for months at a time. (talk about a freeloader). He stays attached until the female lays eggs in a nest and then he fertilizes them. So...if those two males stay attached to that one female and they both fertilize her eggs, she won't know who her baby daddy is. There is white trash, now there is crab trash.
- Their blood is blue because copper is a large component.
- When you see horseshoe crab shells washed up on a beach, it's not that they died, they shed their shells. Apparently that happens many times in the course of their lifetime which may be as much as 20 years.
- They are more closely related to spiders and scorpions than to crabs. That explains why they are so creppy looking.
Who knew???
Check out the photo gallery for a closer look! By the way, I am wearing a shirt.

The road to nowhere. Every main road in Chokoloskee ends in a dead end. That is because it is surrounded by water on all sides. Hence the reason it is called Chokoloskee "Island". I thought I would give you a little Chokoloskee history. The Island is only about 150 acres total. To put it in perspective, it's not much bigger than our farm. The Seminole Indians were the first inhabitants of this area and they named the island "Chokoloskee" pronounced "Chuck a lus kee", meaning old house. Apparently no one knows what the significance of the name is. The island is basically a shell mound. The Indians built up the area with shells so the land would rise above the water and they could safely live there in all kinds of weather. The water around Chokoloskee is no more than 5 feet deep at it's deepest. You could probably walk across the bay for a few miles and the water wouldn't be over your head. You may however, get stuck in the mucky bottom. Lorrie wants to take a mud bath on the beach and use the slimey snot balls that wash up on the beach to condition her hair. I'm not sure that I'm up for that.

America Truly Is A Melting Pot
Joe and I went to Miami to pick up Lorrie at the airport. I thought maybe we should check out South Beach since we were so close. Maybe we would see someone famous. Actually we were there way too early for star sightings. They don't come out till late at night and then I'm sure they don't go where we were. Anyway we saw our share of interesting sights. Mostly in the form of people of all shapes and sizes and dressed in all sorts of attire. Joe was so consumed with the "atmosphere" he called a bar, a bra. Talk about a Freudian slip. The most...well.....I don't even know what to call it, most unusual sighting was a rather large African American woman wearing a black thong with black see through tights over it. I think she was wearing a black tube top or something, I'm not sure. I couldn't stop looking at her butt. Not just because of her attire, but because I've never seen a butt sooooo big or shaped like hers. You seriously could have rested a full table setting on her shelf butt. I am not exaggerating in the slightest. I'm not judging, she's probably a very nice hooker...I mean woman. Seriously though, anyone dressed like that is begging to be looked at and talked about. I thought about taking a picture but I didn't have my wide angle lens with me. The most surreal sightings were the signs below. I wasn't sure if this group of bible thumpers was for real or not. I'm sure that the guy with the sandwich board violated at least one of those directives. Miami is a potpourri of unique individuals. I miss Ft. Wayne.

Identity Crisis

I'm having a major identity crisis. Maybe it's because I'm hanging around with women 20 years older than I am. I don't know. My hair doesn't look right, the clothes I have don't seem to fit my personality anymore. I'm not sure where I fit in. Everyone here is older and everyone at home is younger. Maybe I'll start a support group for women turning 50. I'll call it: "The What The Hell Are We Supposed To Do Now" support group. I'm thinking about the haircut that Katie Holmes has on the cover of Glamour. What do you think??

Another Day In Paradise
Another day in Paradise has come to an end. Senior aerobics and yoga. I had to laugh during aerobics. I was at the back of the room and looking out over the crowd of around 15 people it reminded me of the chickens. There were a few groups of two or three talking and laughing and jumping around. Every group was cackling louder than the next and you could barely hear the DVD. It really didn't matter though because the DVD had only about 4 different steps throughout the whole thing. The women talking were jumping around, but not with the DVD. They were doing their own thing. Then there were the loners chickens intently concentrating on their mission at hand. It was quite amusing. I am not knocking their determination though. I hope when I'm 70 I'm still able to workout.
Joe and I just got back from happy hour. Happy hour consisted of: me, Joe, two chairs and two glasses of wine on the beach in the bay. Doesn't get any better than that. We're gearing up for our Anniversary tomorrow. I will leave you with another "What Doesn't Belong" photo. Try to find the object without enlarging the photo. That would be cheating.

What Doesn't Belong?
I've probably watched the Dora video that I have for the grandkids 100 times. Falta Algo (somethings missing.) See, I've learned a spanish phrase. It inspired me to think of my own fun little game. In these 3 photos you have to find what doesn't belong. These are easy, but I wanted everyone to get the idea before I spring some really hard ones on you. Good luck!

Barbie Is 50

I was born the same year as Barbie. So was Simon Cowell, Danny Bonaduce, Fabio, Jessica Hahn and Marie Osmond; just to name a few. I'm pretty sure we've all had a little work done especially that bitch Barbie. The top photo is how she looks now, left photo is of her in 1959. I actually had the 1959 Barbie. I think Steve got it for me. I wish I still had it, it's worth thousands of dollars now. One sold on e-bay a few years ago for over $3500.00. If you examine her photos of today versus 1959, you can tell she's had work done. She never used to have a belly button so for sure she's had a tummy tuck. Her eyes also look a little lifted at the corners so I'm pretty sure that indicates a possible face lift or at the very least an eyebrow lift. She's probably had some chemical peels as well because she should have some sun spots on her face from all of that time she has spent in Malibu. It's a fact to that blondes don't age as well as brunettes. Her ponytail is probably a little tight too. That helps give the appearance of smoother facial skin. I actually have a hair clip that not only pulls up my hair but my face as well. I wear it when I'm feeling old. Instant face lift. This photo of Barbie is how she would look had she not had any work done.
